I am part of a team working on upgrading the Old City of Jerusalem from all aspects concerned. My part is of course the accessibility, mainly of the streets' access. (If you did not yet visit it, this is a very unique spot - quite inaccessible- located on two hills full of stairs. Many considerations must be addressed before one can recommend anything: Heritage, all religions, archeology, preservation as opposed to modernization and progress, tourism as well as local citizens welfare etc. etc.) I wonder whether you or other ECA members came across some work which was done regarding audit of accessibility in old cities (not buildings or specific sites in...), data analysis etc. Is there some on going work en route, or perhaps some unpublished work?

Special toilets for adults assistance |

A new issue that deals with toilet facilities for adults with heavy impairments is now in study in my Department. The aim is to know what is being done in Europe in order to provide equipments and spaces (next to traditional toilets) in airports, train stations, highway rest points, malls, etc, where people who need to change diapers and have special washing care can be assisted by their escorts.To be properly assisted they must be transfered into a bed or a hammock, which implies providing a bigger space than the one in an average toilet. I confess I did not find any references about this preoccupation. Is it possible to disseminate this question in order to get someone's help?

Hello, We have heard there’s an European Lobby to promote “Shared space” all around Europe.
Shortly : “Shared space” consist in removing obstacles and road signs in a defined space to gather all the road users (including pedestrians and cyclists). The idea comes from the Netherlands and has been developed in Great Britain already. Three tows are interested in Luxembourg. It seems that the safety road instances defend the approach. Disabled people seem to have been forgotten in all the process. In Germany, the DBSV defending the rights of visually impaired people asked for “adapted shared space”. New publication: European Concept for Accessibility for Administrations
The Centre "Living Upright" has translated into Serbian the latest publication of the European Concept for Accessibility Network (EuCAN), entitled "European Concept for Accesibility for Administrations".
The translation into Serbian and its printing were made possible thanks to support from OSCE Mission in Serbia, Ministry of Labour and Social Policy of the Republic of Serbia, Secretariat for Architecture, Urabn Planning and Building of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, and the City of Novi Sad.
The electronic version of the publication in Serbian is available on our website http://www.czuns.org/ in pdf and word formats.
